When two friends decide to start a business together, you have incredibly high hopes for the venture but you also have some worries - anything from financial struggles, to how you'll divvy up the responsibilities, to the possibility of a strain or worse on the friendship. What you don't ever imagine is that one of you will endure the loss of a child.
Sixteen months ago yesterday, my best friend and business partner, Kelly Buckley, lost her twenty-three year old son, Stephen. His unexpected death shook us all to our core and for Kelly, I can't even begin to fathom truly what it was like. Except that she let us all have a glimpse into the days and weeks following his death in her inspirational book Gratitude in Grief.
And while her heartwrenching tale will make you rush to hug your children and tell them you love them, it has an unexpected twist on grief - finding "one little thing" each day to be thankful for can help ease the struggle of your loss. One person told me they thought it was a revolutionary take on the grief process because it allows the griever to keep their loved one in their heart while at the same time being able to stay focused on the good things that still remain in their life.
Kelly will personally share here story at the "Remembering Our Children" bereavement event on Saturday, November 13th in Rock Hill. Open to anyone in the Charlotte area, I encourage those suffering from the loss of a child to attend.
